Insurance can be confusing. Your orthodontic experience shouldn't be.
One of the first questions families ask when considering orthodontic treatment is:
“Does my insurance cover braces or clear aligners or Invisalign?”
The answer isn't necessarily about which type of appliance you choose. In many cases, what matters is whether your dental plan includes an orthodontic benefit and what that benefit provides.
Orthodontic benefits can have different rules than your regular dental benefits, including lifetime maximums, age limitations, waiting periods, eligibility requirements, and different payment schedules.
At Camilo Riaño Orthodontics, we believe understanding your financial options should be part of a positive orthodontic experience. That's why we work to make the insurance process as simple as possible for our patients.
Camilo Riaño Orthodontics is not contracted with dental insurance companies, which means we are an out-of-network orthodontic practice.
But being out-of-network does not mean you have to handle your insurance on your own.
When you provide us with your insurance information early in the process, we can submit it through OrthoFi to verify your orthodontic benefits. Our team will also submit your insurance claims to your insurance company on your behalf.
Our goal is to help you understand what your plan may contribute toward orthodontic treatment and what you can expect financially—without requiring you to spend hours on the phone trying to decipher your insurance benefits.
Orthodontic insurance isn't always as straightforward as looking at the annual maximum listed on your dental insurance plan.
Many plans have a separate orthodontic lifetime maximum, which is the total amount an insurance company will contribute toward eligible orthodontic treatment over the lifetime of that benefit.
Depending on your individual plan, your orthodontic benefit may also be affected by:
Some plans contribute a percentage of treatment costs up to a specific lifetime maximum, while others provide a fixed orthodontic benefit.
That's why two people with the same insurance company can have completely different orthodontic benefits.
Your specific plan matters.
One common misconception is that insurance automatically treats braces and clear aligners differently.
The important factor is typically your orthodontic benefit—not simply the type of appliance you choose.
If your plan includes an orthodontic benefit, that benefit determines what your insurance may contribute toward eligible orthodontic treatment. Some plans may have specific exclusions or limitations, so the details of your individual plan still matter.
Instead of asking only:
“Does my insurance cover Invisalign?”
the better question is:
At Camilo Riaño Orthodontics, we first determine which treatment options are appropriate for your smile. If braces and clear aligners are both appropriate, your treatment decision should be based on your clinical needs, treatment goals, lifestyle, and preferences—not on the assumption that insurance automatically favors one over the other.
Once we determine your treatment options, we can help you understand how your orthodontic benefit may apply.
Dental insurance isn't the only financial resource you may have available for orthodontic treatment.
If you have an HSA or FSA, it's a good idea to check your balance and understand your plan's deadlines as the end of the year approaches.
Many FSA plans have a “use it or lose it” provision, meaning unused funds may not carry over indefinitely. If your plan requires you to use your funds by December 31, you don't want to let eligible funds go unused.
Your HSA/FSA is separate from your dental insurance, and OrthoFi does not verify HSA or FSA funds. We recommend checking directly with your plan administrator to understand your balance, eligible expenses, and applicable deadlines.
Insurance is an important part of planning for orthodontic treatment, but it shouldn't necessarily be the deciding factor in who provides your care.
Choosing an out-of-network orthodontist gives you the freedom to consider what matters most to you and your family:
Orthodontic treatment can involve dozens of appointments and an ongoing relationship with your orthodontist and their team. Your experience throughout that journey matters.
When comparing orthodontic practices, consider the complete value you're receiving:
Expertise + Treatment Options + Technology + Convenience + Service + Experience + Results
A difference in out-of-pocket expense may look significant when you're comparing treatment fees, but consider that difference across the entire length of treatment.
If the orthodontist you prefer offers an experience, treatment approach, location, scheduling options, level of service, or communication style that better fits your family, that difference may be well worth it.
We want our patients to make the most of the insurance benefits available to them. At the same time, we don't believe an insurance deadline should determine when or how you receive orthodontic treatment.
The first step is determining what treatment is appropriate for you or your child. Your teeth, bite, growth, treatment goals, and individual needs should guide that decision.
Then, we can look at your insurance benefits and other financial resources to help you understand your options.
Insurance should support your treatment decision—not make it for you.
You shouldn't have to become an insurance expert to start orthodontic treatment.
At Camilo Riaño Orthodontics, our team is here to help you understand the financial side of your treatment from the beginning.
Provide us with your insurance information early, and we'll help you navigate the process.
We'll use OrthoFi to verify your orthodontic insurance benefits, and we'll submit your insurance claims on your behalf. We'll also help you understand the financial options available to you so you can make an informed decision about your care.
Because choosing an orthodontist should be about more than simply finding a practice that is “in-network.”
It should be about finding a doctor and team you trust, value, and feel confident placing your smile—or your child's smile—in their hands.
If you're considering braces or clear aligners, schedule a consultation with Dr. Camilo Riaño.
We'll start by determining the right orthodontic treatment for your smile and then help you understand how your insurance benefits and financial options fit into your treatment plan.
Your smile. Your treatment. Your experience.
